JOSEPH WHITE Associated Press Writer= WASHINGTON (AP) — After a round that lasted 7 hours — with a long pause in between — the spelling bee finally had its eight finalists. Four boys and four girls remained Friday night to vie for the title of champion speller at the 83rd Scripps National Spelling Bee. Among the spellers remaining was Laura Newcombe, 11, of Toronto, who was attempting to become the first Canadian to win the bee. There was also Anamika Veeramani, 14, of North Royalton, Ohio, who finished tied for fifth last year. The winner, who would emerge from a field of 273 spellers over the three-day competition, receives more than $40,000 in cash and prizes. The finals were preceded by...
